How to Choose the Right Nanny for Your Family
Choosing a nanny is one of the most personal decisions a family can make. The right person becomes part of your daily life — a steady, trusted presence for your children. Here is how we guide families through the process.
Start with your needs, not a job title
Before reviewing candidates, write down what your week actually looks like. How many hours? Live-in or live-out? Do you need help with school runs, languages, cooking for the children, or travel? A clear brief is the single biggest predictor of a successful placement.
Look for character first
Qualifications and experience matter, but warmth, patience and judgement matter more. During interviews, ask candidates to describe a difficult moment with a child and how they handled it. Their answer tells you more than any CV.
Questions worth asking
- How would you spend a typical day with a child of this age?
- How do you handle discipline and boundaries?
- Can you describe your approach to screen time and routines?
- Why did you leave your last position?
Verify everything
Always confirm identity, right to work, and at least two references you speak to directly. A reputable agency handles background and criminal-record checks for you — and should never skip them.
Trust the trial
A paid trial day, ideally with the children present, reveals chemistry that interviews cannot. Watch how the candidate engages: do they get down to the child’s level? Are they calm and attentive?
The best placements are not simply qualified — they feel like family. Take your time, and trust your instincts.
