Live-in vs Live-out Nanny: Which Is Right for Your Family?
The first decision most families make isn’t who to hire — it’s the format. Live-in or live-out? That single choice shapes your cost, your privacy and the kind of support you actually get. Here’s how to decide.
What each format means
- Live-in — the nanny lives in your home, with their own room, and is on hand across the day, often into the evening. You provide accommodation and meals; the cash salary is usually lower as a result.
- Live-out — the nanny commutes, works set hours, then goes home. The cash salary is higher, and the boundaries are clearer.
When live-in makes sense
- Long or unpredictable hours, frequent travel, early starts or late nights.
- A newborn, or several young children, needing support around the clock.
- You have the space, and you value having help on hand.
The trade-off is household privacy. A live-in arrangement works best when expectations and off-hours are agreed clearly from day one.
When live-out makes sense
- A predictable schedule and fairly standard hours.
- You’d rather keep your family’s space to yourselves.
- You’re comfortable with a higher monthly salary in exchange for that separation.

- What do our actual weekly hours look like — not the plan, the reality?
- Do we have suitable live-in accommodation?

The practical middle ground
Plenty of families start live-out and move to live-in as life changes — a new baby, a relocation, a busier season — or the other way round. The format isn’t permanent, and the right one depends on the season your family is in.
