Work Permit for a Nanny in Turkey: How It Works
Employing a foreign nanny in Turkey means putting her on a work permit. A common mistake is assuming a residence permit is enough — it isn’t; a residence permit alone doesn’t authorise work. Here’s how the process works.
The key rule
Work in Turkey is only possible on a work permit. The hiring family obtains it, and it is tied to a specific home address — the permit is valid for work in that particular household.
What the application needs
- The employer’s e-signature token — from an authorised provider.
- Proof of household income — via bank statements, typically at least TRY 110,000 per month.
- The candidate’s and employer’s documents.
How the process goes
- If the candidate already holds a residence permit valid for six months or more, the permit can be filed from within Turkey.
- If not, it goes through the consulate: a reference number is issued, and the nanny starts work only after approval and entering on a work visa.
- After arrival, address registration is completed within ~20 business days.
Once she starts
The employer registers the worker with SGK (social security) and pays premiums. This isn’t a formality: without SGK registration the permit is invalid and won’t renew.
How long it takes
Usually a few weeks. The exact timing depends on whether the process runs from within the country or via a consulate, and on the authorities’ workload.
